'Steve? Are you ok?'
'Hm?' I looked up from my breakfast. 'Yeah, I've just got a lot in my mind right now.' No kidding - a strange kid keeps coming in my room late at night and tells me he wants to be friends. Anyone would be a bit distracted by something like that.
'Oh, I'm sorry,' my mum said. 'Anything we could help with?'
I smiled. 'Thanks for the offer, but no, probably not.' True - I don't think my parents would be able to sort something like this out. Quite simply, I was just unnerved by the whole thing. I just wanted Lucas to go and bother someone else. At least he isn't there in the day, but I honestly don't think today would get much worse.
'Yeah,' Josh said, sitting down at the table, 'He probably hasn't been getting much sleep. And he's got a maths test today, so it'll be that too.'
Me and my fat mouth.
'Ok class, you can start now,' the teacher called out. I looked groggily at the paper. Trigonometry. Universal Law #47 - On the day that someone has a lot on their mind and can't focus, they have a maths test on something they have difficulty with. I understand the subject fairly well, but the thought Lucas and what weird stuff might happen tonight kept looming up in my mind and blocking my thoughts. Um... Let's see... SAHCOHT... No, that's not right... SOACAHTO... No... Why can't maths have simple, easy-to-remember formulas, rather than a stupid string of letters?
I realised I was putting my hands in my pockets. I always catch myself doing that when I'm trying to think. I searched my pocket for something to fiddle with, but there wasn't anything. No, wait... I pulled it out. That's odd, I don't normally keep scraps of paper in my pockets... I turned it over.
The answer to question 3 is 57.
See you tonight!
Lucas.

I stared at the piece of paper, then very carefully scrunched it up (making sure to remember the number). That's it. I'm not being confused any longer. Tonight I'm getting answers.
No-one noticed that I'd taken a small torch with me to bed. I tried to stay up for Lucas to arrive, but I remembered that I always wake up when he turns up anyway. Eventually I dozed off.
'Hey! You there?'
My eyes snapped open like a gunshot. 'Lucas?'
'Oh good, I thought you were dead or something,' Lucas' dry voice came over my head. I sat up. Sure enough, the shadowy outline was there.
'Did you send me that note in maths?' I asked.
'You found that?' Lucas replied, the smile audible in his voice. 'I was worried you wouldn't get it. Was it helpful?'
'Um, yeah... Thanks, but you didn't have to,' I said, realising how stupid I sounded with every syllable.
'Oh, think nothing of it,' Lucas said cheerily. 'I was just glad I could help.'
'How did you get it in my pocket?' I asked, desperate for an answer to at least one of my questions.
'Geez, why the all-out offensive?' Lucas said with mock indignation. 'I'm trying to help my friend.'
'But-'
But he doesn't get it, I realised. He's like a person. A person who's never met any other people. He doesn't understand that to be friends you have to spend more time then a few cryptic and frustrating minutes each night. He just doesn't understand, and he's trying so hard it's almost sweet...
But underneath all that, a little part of my brain was saying: he really doesn't want to talk about how the paper got there. I'm sure it wasn't in my pocket before, so he must have done something. Why is he so cagey about talking about it?
At this point all my spiralling thoughts and confusing and frank irritation reached a pitch, at point I turned the torch on full blast and shone it at him.
Lucas sprang back as if scalded with a hiss. I frowned. What was that?
'Ahhh... What was that for?' Lucas said, a note of anger in his voice.
'What?' I said. 'I just want to know what you look like.'
'There's no need to be like about it!' Why was Lucas so angry? 'I have an issue,' he said simply, as if that covers everything. 'And I'm going now. So long.'
'But there's ages before morning-' I started.
You just know he's already gone, don't you?
I'd tried to get answers, but I'd just wound up with more questions. Why can't I get a straight answer any more?
The new chapter. So that's what he had in mind.
Because I've been doing a lot of stuff for the pmd-explorers group recently, I've been trying to balance it out so that if I'm uploading a lot of stuff for them then I'll also upload another chapter of Pokeumans or something like this too. I don't want people to just look at the list of deviations and go 'Nothing interesting here'. I love you guys too much.
EDIT: General improvements.

Very interesting. Vampire, maybe?
